St. Mary’s Academy, a Catholic school in the tradition of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, has participated in the Church’s mission of education for over 150 years. Those who serve the school in a governance role have a distinct responsibility for ensuring the objectives of the school are in harmony with the mission of the Catholic Church and the founding vision and spirit of the Sisters of the Holy Names. Since 1989, the SMA Board of Directors has played a vital governance role in safeguarding the mission and ensuring the Academy’s success and sustainability. The Board promotes excellence in Catholic education at St. Mary’s Academy by providing leadership, strategic direction, oversight, support and advocacy.

Call for SMA Inc. Board Members
St. Mary's Academy Inc. Board of Directors is currently recruiting individuals who are interested in joining the Board in 2024/25.
The school board is a volunteer board composed of talented and dedicated Directors with a diverse mix of expertise, skills and experience. They seek to add motivated community members to their team.
At this time, the Board is seeking individuals with prior experience in board governance, risk and change management, and senior management/executive experience. Qualified candidates will be strong in faith, and passionate about service to the Academy; preference is given to those who are Catholic in good standing.

SMA Foundation Inc.
The St. Mary’s Academy Foundation Inc. was established July 1989 to help the Academy maintain its tradition of excellence in education for young women. The Foundation manages assets and raises funds for bursaries, designated school programs and on-going capital repairs to the Academy’s buildings and grounds. They also manage major capital projects such as A Foundation for the Future capital campaign in 2001, which raised $2.1 million dollars for new labs and upgrades to the 1909 classroom building.

SMA Stewardship
On September 12, 2022, the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, sponsorship of St. Mary’s Academy was officially transferred from the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) to St. Mary’s Academy Stewardship, a public juridic person (church corporation) established by Archbishop Gagnon. The purpose of SMA Stewardship is to further Catholic education that was originally undertaken by the SNJM in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. It implements this purpose by exercising canonical Sponsorship over St. Mary’s Academy Inc. (the school) and the SMA Foundation Inc., through the appointment of the members of the School and the Foundation and the reception of their annual reports. The members of the Academy and the Foundation are accountable to the SMA Stewardship for ensuring the School and the Foundation are implementing their ministry in accordance with the Mission and Governing Philosophy of St. Mary’s Academy and the teachings of the Church.
