Fit for Life
For every SMA student, the physical education and athletics programs encourage fitness, personal growth, leadership and respect for others, and set the foundation for lifelong interests in health, wellness and recreation. The Sister Rita Maureen Gym is the most heavily used space in the school. During the school day it is fully booked with compulsory phys. ed. classes for all 590+ students and noon hour intramurals. After 3:30 and on weekends the gym is the home of the Flames volleyball and basketball teams, and is the indoor training space for badminton, rugby, soccer and track and field.
Unfortunately, at a time when experts are encouraging young people to become more active, our students and our teams have limited opportunities because of a lack of space. Expanded athletic facilities will result in more phys.ed. class time, facilitate longer seasons for teams and enhance the performance of our athletes.
Athletics expansion includes:
- a multi-purpose athletics studio suitable for dance, aerobics, yoga etc.
- a fitness room for weight and cardiovascular training
- more washroom facilities for spectators
- a canteen
